Design.

First, let me start off with a disclaimer. I am not an architect, landscape architect, or a city planner. While I do have a bachelors degree in Architectural design. This degree was from Old Dominion University which does not have an accredited architectural program. The only reason that I have an architectural design degree is because of the heavy load of environmental design credits that I transfered in from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Besides my focus at ODU was mostly on New Urbanism which has become smart growth. I am still very much involved in smart growth. I joined the Kailua Urbn Design Task Force am currently helping to organize a pilot program in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and The University of Hawaii Manoa Sea Grant program. This pilot program is called "Smart Growth for Coastal and Waterfront Communities." I also recently conducted a thourough review of the Ho'opili development on the Ewa Plane in a Graduate Class with Architect Ken Masden as my professor. While dissappointed at the final decision to pave over prime grade "A" farmland, I am hopeful that the DR Horton plan for integrated Agriculture will be successful. I am preparing myself to shepherd that process through implementation. This is critical for Oahu's future to maximize every availible space for agricultue including within the existing urban area. The planner for Ho'opili is an award winning architect from Colorado, Tim Van Meter and also an alum from CU Boulder & Denver. This is the best possible plan for a transit oriented development If we have to start building something on Oahu to help the economy. It is also registered as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Neighborhood Development (ND). I recently achieved accredidation under LEED as a Green Associate by passing the exam with a score of 193. LEED ND accredidation is in my future. I hope you will understand my limitations in being able to design structural elements. While I do have future ambitions for credentials in Urban Planning and Architecture, I do not have them yet. There is a reason why Architects complete such a demanding curriculuum and lengthy internship and that is for the publics safety.
